Franklin—The Lord’s heavenly kingdom gained a precious angel on October 3, 2014, when Dorothy Cobb Kitchen, 89, widow of Alfred Benjamin Kitchen, was called home while a patient at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA, following a gradual decline in her health over the past two years.

She was born in Southampton County, VA, on May 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Tony Roy and Willie Anne Blythe Cobb. Mrs. Kitchen was predeceased by 4 brothers, all from Franklin, VA: J. G. Cobb and wife Clara Belle, Herman Cobb and wife Marjorie “Pete”, Tony Roy Cobb, Jr. and wife Becky, and Shelton Cobb; and, 4 sisters: Ruth Cobb Babb and husband Lewis, and Edith Cobb Simmons and husband Gus, all from Courtland, VA; and, Audrey Christian Cobb, and Jerline Cobb Lankford both from Franklin, VA. Surviving are a brother Melton Rawls Cobb and wife Lois, and sister Gracie Cobb Foster and husband Frank, as well as sister-in-law Margaret Harrell Cobb and brother-in-law John Saunders Lankford, all from Franklin. Also surviving on the Kitchen side of the family are three sisters-in-law: Alice Paige Bryant Kitchen and Adeline Grissom Kitchen, both of Franklin, and Mary Hill Kitchen of Norfolk. She also has a host of nieces and nephews, as well as neighbors and friends, all of whom she loved very dearly.

Others left to cherish her memory include her four daughters, Pam K. Ellis and husband Tommy of Carrsville; Nancy K. Parrish and husband Larry of Franklin; Debbie K. Davis and husband Ray of Courtland; and, Connie K. Jones and husband Perry of Courtland. She also has six grandchildren: “Trish” Davis of Encinitas, CA; Brandon Parrish of Burlington, VT; Erin Wilson of Courtland, VA; Ryan Parrish of Sherman Oaks, CA; Sarah Davis Gray and husband Alex of Courtland, VA; and, Melinda Ellis, of Richmond, VA.

Mrs. Kitchen was a faithful, life-long member of Hunterdale Christian Church where she was active in the Ladies Bible Class, a member of the Sanctuary Choir for several years, and a member of the Women’s Fellowship. She loved her church and her church family.

Mrs. Kitchen owned and operated Dot Kitchen Catering for almost 60 years where she was well-known for her signature chicken salad, fried chicken, sweet pickles, delicious petit fours, and beautiful wedding cakes. Her husband and her four daughters assisted her in this business throughout the years. Lorraine Bundick was her faithful employee for the past 32 years. Folks from far and wide became repeat customers and personal friends whom she cherished deeply.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at Hunterdale Christian Church with Pastor Don Rosie officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Wright Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Hunterdale Christian Church, c/o Nancy K. Parrish, 180 Bobwhite Lane, Franklin, VA.
