COURTLAND—Thomas Lawrence “Tom” Reed Jr., 62, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, in Towson, Maryland. Tom had fought a valiant battle with cancer since February.

Tom was the son of Thomas Lawrence Reed Sr. and Kathleen Harrison Reed of Portsmouth. He was the husband of the late Dianne Daughtrey Reed of Franklin.

He is survived by his son, Christopher Thomas Reed, of Towson, Maryland; a brother, David M. Reed of Wilmington, Delaware; a sister-in-law, Linda Daughtrey Simmons and husband Warren of Courtland; a brother-in-law, Thomas E. Daughtrey Jr. of Chesapeake; and beloved nephews and cousins.

Tom was a graduate of Portsmouth Catholic High School and Dabney Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge, Virginia.

He was employed by Union Camp Corporation and International Paper Woodlands Division in Forestry Research. More recently he managed forestry endeavors for South Rivers Forestry Consultants in King William, Virginia. Tom loved the outdoors and nature and had a passion for its maintenance and preservation.

He was an Eagle Scout and served as a Scout Master of former Troop 28 of Franklin.

He was a past member of Franklin Fire and Rescue, a member of the American Heart Association, and in recent years, a very active member of the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club.

Tom was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Franklin.

The funeral will be on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at the St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Franklin. Burial will be immediately following in Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley, Virginia.

Friends and family are invited to express condolences after the service in the Sedley Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, Sedley.

The family wishes to express sincerest gratitude to Dr. Jennifer Kanakry and Ms. Lynn Trench, RN, of Johns Hopkins Hospital Oncology Department. Also, the family would like to express thanks to all who became a part of Team Reed and brought joy and support into the life of Tom Reed during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Johns Hopkins University and sent to Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Ctr., 750 E Pratt St., Suite 1700, Baltimore, MD 21202. Please designate donations to Dr. Jennifer Kanakry – Lymphoma Clinical Research, or Nurses Patient Support Fund. Memorial donations may also be made to St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 1014 Clay St., Franklin, VA 23851.
