Shirley S. Snead

FRANKLIN—Shirley Simmons Snead, 79, passed away August 21, 2014. She was a native of Southampton County and was a daughter of the late Samuel Ray and Odell Bryant Simmons. She was also predeceased by her sister, Willie S. Taylor. Mrs. Snead had retired as an Executive Secretary from Union Camp Corporation and was a member of High Street United Methodist Church. She was a longtime organist in the community having played for Barnes United Methodist Church for 23 years and had played for High Street United Methodist Church and Franklin Congregational Christian Church. Along with her husband, Bobby, Shirley was instrumental in the recovery of downtown Franklin during the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William H. “Bobby” Snead; two daughters, Michele Snead Beale and husband, Tom, of Franklin and Kristen Snead Peele and husband, Randy, of Greenville, NC; two grandchildren, Jakob Snead and Randal Peele, Jr., who loved “Mimi,” and one niece, Shera Dare Wheeler.

The funeral will be held at 11 AM Monday, August 25, 2014 at the High Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Ashley and the Rev. Frank Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 PM Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Wright Funeral Home and suggests memorials be made to Alzheimer’s Association, South Eastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.
