COURTLAND—During the Franklin-Southampton County Fair, the Livestock Building was buzzing with excitement. There was a lot happening.

Top, in the Cloverbud Feeder Pig exhibit, Evelyn Clark, 7, of Franklin, had a pig that decided to take a break; bottom, Wyatt Raiford, 12, of Franklin, and Kaleb Bland, 9, of Windsor, compete in the Junior Fitting and Showing during the 4-H Breeding Heifer Show. — SUBMITTED | TABBY RAIFORD
Throughout the four days of the fair, several events associated with 4-H took place: Goat Show, Feeder Pig Show, Breeding Heifer Show, Poultry Show, Rabbit Show, Poster Contest, Goat Obstacle Course Event, Goat Costume Contest, Livestock Pen Decoration Contest, Herdsmanship Contest and Stockman’s Event.
All of these events were informative, entertaining and fun. None of them would have been possible without dedicated parents, volunteers, show officials, in-kind sponsors and monetary supporters.
4-H Livestock Show Sponsors
Local sponsors are generous in their gifts supporting the 4-H Livestock Show. Primary sponsors include Murphy-Brown LLC; Farm Bureau of Southampton; Colonial Farm Credit; Beamon and Johnson Inc; Birdsong Peanuts; and Southampton High School FFA.
Other generous sponsoring businesses and individuals include: Rich & Rich Bonded Auctioneers International Inc.; Meherrin Ag & Chemical Company; Hampton Farms; Bayer CropScience; Gerald’s Veterinary Service; B&S Enterprises Inc.; Colony Tire Corporation (Emporia); Commonwealth Gin; Coastal AgroBusiness; Dixie Plant Farms; Helena Chemical; Hoober, Inc.; Precision Exteriors LLC; Providence Ag; Southern States (Dean Moore); Berlin Farm Service; Carolina Eastern, Inc.; Dail’s Home Center; Jernigan Oil & Propane (Duck Thru); Larry and Bernadette Whitley; Lee M. Generous in-kind donations were given by Tractor Supply Company; J.T. Barham & Co.; Parker Battery; The Pantry Inc. (Kangaroo Express); and Old McDonald’s Rabbit Ranch.
Other businesses that gave their time and talents to the 4-H Livestock Shows are Pinecroft Farm and Southampton Veterinary Clinic.
Thank you to all of these sponsors for their generosity and support of 4-H.
4-H Livestock Show Volunteers
Without the help of adult volunteers, the 4-H Livestock Shows would not be possible. These volunteers include the parents who spend their time volunteering and assisting in the barn during the fair as well as those who serve in official roles in preparation for the fair throughout the year. Walter Young Jr., and Jennifer Vincent serve on the Franklin-Southampton County Fair Board as 4-H Livestock Shows co-chairs. The 4-H Show superintendents included: Jennifer Johnson, 4-H Goat superintendent; Mary Futrell, 4-H Rabbit superintendent; Michelle Bergin, 4-H Poultry superintendent; Chad Brock, 4-H Feeder Pig superintendent; and Walt Young, Janie Young and Jennifer Vincent, 4-H Breeding Heifer superintendents.
Show judges included Heidi Shook (goat, heifer, feeder pigs), Charlene Everette (rabbits), and Michelle Bergin (poultry).
We are appreciative of all of our 4-H Livestock Show officials — fair board representatives, superintendents, and judges — for their efforts in helping 4-H members gain a better understanding of their animals and themselves through the 4-H Livestock Shows.
Parents of the 24 4-H Livestock Shows participants are also deserving of praise for helping their child(ren) prepare for the fair and for assisting whenever a hand was needed during the shows or in the barn.
Congratulations to all 24 exhibitors at this year’s 4-H Livestock Shows!
For more information about 4-H or how to get involved, please call the Southampton County Extension Office at 653-2572, or email Celia Brockway, Extension agent for 4-H Youth Development, at cbrock7@vt.edu.
If you are interested in observing a livestock show, the next county fair in the Tidewater area will be Sept. 11-14 in Windsor. Please visit www.thefairiscoming.com for a schedule of 4-H events.
