John W. Barnes

FRANKLIN—Deacon John Wesley Barnes of Shady Brook Trail, departed this life to claim eternal rest and peace, while a patient in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born on April 19, 1930, to Martha Jordan and George Barnes.

Deacon Barnes was a member of White Oak Spring Baptist Church, 26125 Delaware Rd., where he served on the Deacon Board and the Male Chorus. After 30 years of dedicated labour, Wesley retired from Planter’s Peanut Corporation in Suffolk.

He was a well-known barber who served the community for 55 years.

Wesley was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and five brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Lula Mae Barnes; two daughters, Charlotte Barnes and Schulyer Scott (Jerry); three sons, Gerald Barnes (Evelyn), Ronald Barnes (Angelia) and Kenneth Barnes (Laverne); five sisters, Louise Joyner, Thelma Stith, Frances Flowers, Delores Barnes and Marie Scott; one brother, Richard Barnes; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives.

The homegoing service will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, White Oak Spring Baptist Church, 26125 Delaware Road, Franklin, with the pastor, the Rev. Melvin Wofford delivering the message of comfort. Viewing at the church will take place earlier at 11 a.m.

The committal and benediction will be held in Southview Cemetery.

The traditional service with dignity will be conducted by William M. Johnson and Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St., Franklin.
