FRANKLIN—After failing to elect a chair during the Franklin City School Board’s July 1 organizational meeting, that item was again on the agenda on the called meeting of July 8. However, new ward 3 representative Andrea Hall-Leonard made a motion to table the item until the July 17 meeting, due to feeling unready to make the decision.
That motion was seconded by Sherita Ricks-Parker, ward 4, and the vote was 3-3 to table it. Nancy Godwin, ward 2, Dawna Walton, ward 6, and Will Councill, ward 1, voted nay, while Edna King, at-large and current chair, Ricks-Parker and Hall-Leonard voted yea. Jeanette Austin, ward 5, was absent.
School board Attorney Taylor Williams said in the event of a tie, the item would be carried over to the next meeting.
The next meeting is Thursday, July 17, with closed session starting at 6:30 p.m. and open session at 7:30 p.m. People interested in speaking during Citizens’ Time should contact Pam Kindred, school board clerk, at 569-8111 extension 5901, or in person at the meeting before 7:30 p.m.
Previously, Ricks-Parker nominated Edna King to continue as chair, while Walton nominated Councill to serve as chair. With Austin absent at that meeting, the vote was 3-3 with Walton, Councill and Godwin voting for Councill, while King, Ricks-Parker and Hall-Leonard were in favor of King. Because of the tie, that vote was carried over to Tuesday’s meeting.
