First let me state that I am a firm believer in recognizing our youth for their accomplishments both academically and athletically. However, I was quite puzzled recently when I saw a picture on page Bl of the June 13, 2014 issue of The Tidewater News under the caption of’ ‘Southampton Academy Raiders honored by Sussex Board, Conference.” Upon reading the brief article under the picture I learned that the 2014 VCC Champion Southampton Academy Raiders Soccer team was recognized by the Sussex County Board of Supervisors in a resolution for the team’s accomplishments this season at the Southampton Academy Awards ceremony. The Board unanimously approved the resolution at its May 15 meeting.

As a mother of three children who attended both Sussex County public schools and Tidewater Academy, an independent school, I am extremely proud of these young athletes and their being the 2014 VCC Champion Soccer Team. I know many of the families of these young men. It was also interesting to note that the son of Eric Fly, chairman of the Sussex Board of Supervisors, was front and center in the photograph recognizing the Southampton Academy Raiders.

My question to the Sussex County Board of Supervisors is this: When did the Board last pass a resolution recognizing a Sussex County youth attending any school in Sussex County for his or her accomplishments either in the classroom or on the playing field? And if they have passed such a resolution, why wasn’t it covered by the local press? If I have missed such a recognition I will quickly extend an apology.
