COURTLAND—George Robert Gay Jr., 66, passed away at home following a courageous battle with cancer on June 6, 2014.

He was a son of the late George Robert Gay Sr. and Margaret Cook Gay Venters, and had retired from Union Camp Corporation, where he was a supervisor.

George was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. His greatest joy came from serving the Lord, loving his family and helping others.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Virginia Burton Gay; a daughter, Amy Gay of Franklin; a son, Burt Gay of Como, North Carolina; two brothers, Barry Gay and his wife, Cindy, of Suffolk, and Joe Humble and his wife, Olivia, of High Point, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Karen Pierce and her husband, Tommy, of Franklin; six grandchildren, Chandler Turner, Rob Gay, Mackenzie Ferguson, Mike Gay, Matthew Gay and Colby Gay.

He was also predeceased by a sister, Betty Jean Brinkley, and a brother, Stevie Gay.

The memorial service took place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in Courtland Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Speight officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Amy, on 22511 Harvest Drive, Franklin, and requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Courtland Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 148, Courtland, VA 23837.
