Wayne G. Rock

VALDESE, N.C.—Wayne Gray Rock, formerly of Boykins, passed away on June 2, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

He was born on Jan. 23, 1947, in Richmond.

Together with his father and brother he was co-owner of Elmo L. Rock Oil Company in Boykins. In later years, he retired from Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton, North Carolina.

He was a graduate of Southampton High School, where he excelled in football and was known as “Tank” Rock. He attended Gardner Webb University and was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s All American team. He graduated from Cameron State University with a Bachelor of Science degree.

He was an avid sports fan, loved fishing and the Atlanta Braves.

He was preceded in death by parents, Mary Elizabeth Condrey and Elmo L. Rock, who lived in Boykins; brother, Louis Kent Rock; and infant son, John Gray Rock.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Perrou Rock; three daughters, Heather Rock Simmons and husband, David, of Courtland, Erin Rock Jackson and husband, Les, of Kernersville, North Carolina, and Amy Rock Freeman and husband, Ryan, of Morganton; two grandchildren, Meghan and Madeline Simmons; three nieces; two nephews; and numerous cousins.

The graveside service will take place in Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins at 10 a.m. on Saturday June 7.

Family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall at Boykins Baptist Church.

The arrangements are being handled by Wright Funeral Home in Franklin.
