Kay N. Pope

CAPRON—Kay Nurney Pope, 67, passed away on June 2, 2014, at Sentara Norfolk General.

She was a native of Capron and was a 1964 graduate of Southampton High School and attended Pan American Business School and Campbell University.

She was an active member of Capron United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School superintendent and financial secretary.

Kay had retired as Human Resource manager at Southampton Correctional Center after 31 years of service, and was very active in community affairs, having been a member of the Southampton County Planning Commission, executive director of the Franklin-Southampton County Futures, and was a member of the Country Acres Garden Club and the Pinecrest Garden Club and Book Club.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter and loved her family dearly.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 47 years, James D. “Pete” Pope; her mother, Helen Newsome Nurney; two sons, James D. “Jim” Pope III and his wife, Robin, and Joseph W. Pope and his wife, Suzanne; one sister, Linda Nurney Vick; one brother, William Henry “Bill” Nurney Jr.; four grandchildren, Kendal, Betsy, Austin and Ashby Pope.

Kay was predeceased by her father, William Henry Nurney.

The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, in Capron United Methodist Church with Pastor Nancy Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Capron Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, and suggests that memorials be made to the Capron United Methodist Church, 23121 Main St., P. O. Box 159, Capron, VA 23829.
