FRANKLIN—On May 9, Paul D. Camp Community College had its 43rd Annual Commencement. The ceremony took place at the College’s Regional Workforce Development Center in Franklin. More than 250 students received their degrees and certificates.

Dr. Lawrence G. Dotolo, president of the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education, delivered the keynote address about the importance of “Lifelong Learning.” Student speaker for the commencement was Pamela Reid of Suffolk, who received a standing ovation for her delivery of “What Kind of Fabric Are You?”

In addition to the conferring of degrees and certificates, the following honors and additional recognitions occurred:

• Virginia Community College Association’s 2013 Showcase awards winners were recognized. They are: Madeline Marks, Tutor Coordinator for Student Support Services; Troy Hand, Librarian; LaQuisa McGlone, Admissions Support assistant; and Angela Lawhorne, Career Development Center and Job Placement coordinator.

• 2013-14 PDCCC Award for Excellence in Education was presented to Sandra Walker, College Success Coach for the Hobbs Suffolk Campus. Walker was selected by her peers for this honor. This is an annual recognition at the College.

• J. Paul Councill Jr. Community Service Award was presented to Warren Beale, executive vice president of Manry Rawls. He serves as chairman of both the Franklin-Southampton Economic Development Corporation and Franklin-Southampton Charities Board. He is also a board member of the Franklin Southampton Chamber Foundation, The Village at Woods Edge, the Franklin Business Incubator, and the PDCCC Regional Workforce Development Council.

• Professor Emeritus recognition was bestowed upon Martha Kello, who retired after 25 years of teaching at PDCCC. She retired as associate professor of Early Childhood Development and Reading.
