COURTLAND—Kelby Lewis turned in an impressive pitching performance in her first time taking the mound for the Lady Indians.

The rookie freshman threw seven scoreless innings while scattering five hits, striking many out. She did not issue any walks, all while allowing only one Eagle runner to reach second base. The defense was equally stellar, with 16 putouts and no errors on the afternoon.

Offensively, the Indians racked up nine hits, but lacked the break thru hits in scoring only two runs. Both runs came in the top of the third inning, when Courtney Greene and Madison Cabell scored on a Haley Boykins single to left field. Greene had reached on a walk and Cabell had singled to reach and both advanced into scoring position on a passed ball.

“I know it’s early in the season and a win is a win, but going forward, we’ve got to find a way to get those clutch hits when needed,” said Head Coach Susan Melbye. “Overall, our defense was impressive. Kelby threw the ball well, hit her spots and trusted her defense. But our girls have to give her a little more help in the future.

“But also,” she added, “games like this will help us on down the road. This will be a great building block and will help get us where we need to be.” Upcoming games for the Lady Indians will be at Nansmond Suffolk Academy Monday, April 7. On Tuesday, the Indians will host Brunswick and the team will also host Park View on Thursday.
