COURTLAND—The Southampton County School Board unanimously agreed on Monday to add 15 minutes to the end of each school day effective March 24 to April 18. Dismissal will be at 3:30 p.m. for that period. This plan was recommended by Supt. Dr. Alvera Parrish as a way for the schools to make up for time lost by the most recent snowstorm.

“This is to avoid cutting into the spring break or extending the school year,” said Parrish.

The county, like many other school divisions in Virginia this winter, has had to find creative ways to maintain a required number of school days in spite of several past closings due to inclement weather.

Also approved was the superintendent’s suggestion that the marking period be extended to April 7 as a way to give students more time to improve their overall grade average. Report cards will go out April 11.
