CHESAPEAKE—James Elvin Chambliss, 77, was called home on March 6, 2014. He was born in Franklin to the late Roy and Lula Barrett Chambliss, Sr.

He was a native of Virginia Beach. He retired in 1998 from Rosemont Middle School in Norfolk where he served as a history teacher for 32 years.

He received his early education in Franklin Public Schools and graduated from Hayden High School in May 1956. Later he attended Virginia State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Hampton University.

He is survived by his loving son, Alonzo Chambliss of Washington, D.C.; sister, Ruby Chambliss Lawrence of Franklin; three brother-in-laws: George F. Reed and Buddy Paschall of Chesapeake, Florence Paschall of Charlotte, N.C.; five nieces, Marie Lawrence, Johnesta Blount, Belinda and Vickie Reid, and Pauline Achua; two nephews, Eugene Reed and Eric Reid. He also leaves a host of cousins, other relatives, church family, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lula and Roy Barrett Chambliss Sr.; five sisters, Evora Chambliss, Theresa Chambliss, Ella Chambliss, Alma Chambliss Reid and Sudie Chambliss Reed; and a brother, Roy Chambliss Jr.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Parson’s Home Assisted Living for their loving and compassionate care.

The viewing will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 14 at Metropolitan Funeral Home, 120 W. Berkley Ave, Norfolk.

The homegoing service will take place Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m. in East End Church of God, 410 East St., Franklin. Bishop Stephen D. Willis will be the eulogist. The interment is in the Southview Cemetery.

A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson and Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St., Franklin, Va.
