Metro Conference honors deserved

The Metro Conference has named Isle of Wight Academy Coach Chris Hooper and his daughter, Gabriella, as girls basketball coach of the year and player of the year. Both recipients were reportedly quite surprised by the recognition.

But they really should not been taken aback. Each brings experience and a desire to do better on the court. The coach was noted for his style and getting results; Gabriella for her work on the court.

Further, their love of the game is only more enhanced by the honor. Hooper is in his eighth season; his daughter wants to play in college when the time come.

What also impresses us about the Hoopers is how parents can have a positive effect on their children’s lives when they’re actively involved. The relationship doesn’t automatically have to be adversarial just because of adolescence, for example.

Whether it’s in sports or academics, we urge parents to be present in their children’s lives. Everyone wins.
