Use extra time to save your life

Daylight saving time – or savings time, as some people call it – takes effect at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 9. Before retiring that evening, please remember to set all clocks and watches one hour ahead.

Another thing to do that Sunday is change the batteries in your smoke alarms. Regular maintenance of such a simple device could mean the difference between life and death if a fire starts at your home for any reason.

A related task is to check the pressure of any fire extinguishers at home. If need be, buy a couple for the kitchen or other areas. Further, establish or practice emergency exit strategies for yourself or your family members. Check that important documents are secured in fireproof containers that can be retrieved later.

Don’t worry about how long all that will take on your day of rest. You’ve got the time.
