To the Editor:

Traditions are nice for families, friends – and cities like Franklin. Mardi Gras, a/k/a Fat Tuesday, is the first Tuesday in March. The Downtown Franklin Association would like to start a new tradition with the first Franklin Fat Friday Mardi Gras celebration on Feb. 28 at Fred’s Restaurant.

Fat Tuesday is actually Shrove Tuesday, the last day before Lent begins. Hence, the idea of feasting and partying the night before. The King’s Court and Ball are a main feature of Mardi Gras, and we will have the King, Queen and Court at our event. A New Orleans-style buffet will start the evening, and attendees will have the opportunity to find the King’s stolen treasure box. The winner will be rewarded with $150 in cash.

Costumes and masks are not required – but we encourage you to join in the fun and frolic. This is a ticketed event for 21 and over. Tickets are available at several downtown businesses, the Chamber and the DFA office. Call Juanita Richards at 562-3299 or Gayle Schmitz at 516-2660 for more details.
