ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight Sheriff’s deputies responded to 40 vehicle crashes between 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday, said Kristen Wilda, spokeswoman for the IOW Sheriff’s Office.

Icy road conditions were present during the after-work commuting hours, and a number of drivers lost control of their vehicles.

Some accidents involved multiple vehicles while others involved single cars or trucks sliding into ditches or off the roads. Most accidents were relatively minor. However, two victims were taken to the hospital after their vehicles crashed on Rt. 258 near Smithfield Glass.

A normal Sheriff’s Office work shift finds six scheduled patrol units on the roads of Isle of Wight.

From Wednesday afternoon/evening there were 14 sheriff’s units working the many crashes with much-needed assistance from the Virginia State Police, Smithfield Police Department and Windsor Police Department.
