FRANKLIN—Following the death of a 6-year-old child Wednesday morning, the Franklin Police Department has arrested the mother and charged her with murder, said Capt. Tim Whitt, spokesman for FPD.

Shameyer Ronnice Ashburn, 24, of the 500 Block of South Street, was charged with the murder of her child after an investigation led officers to believe her to be a person of interest. She has been remanded to Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.

At 5:40 a.m., officers responded to a room at the Days Inn motel in regards to an unresponsive child. The child was transported to the emergency room at Southampton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
