Hazel W. Lee

FRANKLIN—Hazel Winstead Lee, 92, widow of Samuel Womack Lee, passed away Jan. 25, 2014. Mrs. Lee was born on Feb. 19, 1921, in Nashville, N.C., to John Bert and Ruby Green Winstead. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her stepmother, Maude Winstead, and her first husband, Roger W. Drake, two sisters, Doris Griffin and Anne Berry, and a step-sister, Vernie Saieed.

She graduated from Nashville High School in 1938 and attended Louisburg College. Mrs. Lee retired from the Peanut Growers Cooperative Marketing Association in 1986 after being employed for 41 years. She was a member of High Street United Methodist Church where she had served as treasurer of the United Methodist Women, chairman of the Louise Pace Matthews Circle and member of the Administrative Board. She was an avid bridge player and, after retirement, enjoyed the golf course.

Surviving are her stepchildren, Betty Holland (Phil), Sam Lee Jr. (Brenda), Dixie Heckel (Carl), Jesse Lee (Mary); five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three nieces, Cheryl Stevens of Dallas, Texas, Claudia Mull of Nashville, N.C., and Susan Carpenter of Lexington, S.C.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Jesse Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and suggests memorials be made to High Street United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
