FRANKLIN—A dog’s life doesn’t have be a rough one. If anything, Allie Vargo and April Cutchins are prepared to get your pooch looking – and feeling – like a prize-winner in their salon called – wait for it – It’s a Dog’s Life.

Located in downtown Franklin at 100 South Street, the shop is next door to Southside Gas.

“I’ve always loved animals,” said Vargo, who co-owns the place with her longtime friend, Cutchins. Both said they grew up with pets at their homes.

Both women gained professional experience by working with veterinarian Dr. Wanda Bradshaw. Vargo, who graduated from East Carolina University, went to work at PetSmart, which sent her to a grooming school.

“We both talked about having our own place,” said Cutchins, who added that getting the money together had been an obstacle. Vargo’s mother, Jill, funded her daughter and friend in this venture. The shop opened Dec. 9.

In addition to offering baths and haircuts, It’s a Dog’s Life does ear cleaning, as well as nail trimming and nail grinding. The difference between the two is the latter makes the nails smoother, which can be ideal for lap dogs or homes with wooden floors.

The salon is a certified FURminator, which is a tool designed to reduce shedding.

Before you ask, grooming services are available for cats.

“I’m waiting for a call for ferrets,” said Cutchins with a laugh.

For now, said the two women, the salon is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. They intend to eventually add service on Saturday.
