ADAMS GROVE—A 22-year-old Hampton man crashed in a single car accident at 8:30 a.m. this morning. Witnesses reported that he was driving in a reckless manner, perhaps due to using a handheld electronic device two witnesses believe he was using while driving, said Maj. Gene Drewery, spokesperson for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arriving at the scene of the overturned vehicle, medics pronounced him dead at 8:44 a.m.

Distracted driving is believed to be the cause of the accident, said Drewery. Speed or alcohol was not a factor, he added.

The identity of the driver is being held until next of kin are notified.
