Family Reading Night is a monthly event for families to come to school to read with their children. After students read, they take an Accelerated Reader test on the computer. AR is a computer-based program that reinforces comprehension.

The treat for the night was, after reading and taking the AR tests, families joined with Twynnette Anderson, music teacher and Clinton Smith, art teacher, in a holiday sing-along. The incentive was that the words to each song were projected karaoke-style on a screen that required them to read the words of each song. The students had a blast singing the holiday songs while they played the bells and danced along. This incorporated reading into a fun activity.

Laura Vick, reading specialist at S.P. Morton and coordinator of the program, said she was well pleased with the program, and added that in January they plan to have “Snow Much Fun Reading,” while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies.
