COURTLAND—Many Southampton County residents have a little less than a year to prepare for the closing of the Route 35 Bridge in Courtland. Their connection from Route 35 to Route 58 will be cut off for about 300 days.

As will be discussed during the supervisors’ Monday meeting, a schedule has been established by Waterfront Marine Construction, which will be responsible for the bridge’s destruction and replacement. In a memo from County Administrator Mike Johnson to the board, the bridge will close Dec. 1, 2014, with demolition expected to be done by Jan. 30, 2015.

Driving piles into the Nottoway River, building a concrete substructure, erecting girders, and pouring decks are a few of the subsequent tasks before reopening on the road on Sept. 30.

Another transportation issue up for discussion that evening is the Route 58 Interchange, also in Courtland. There will be utility relocating beginning in September 2014, prior to construction starting in early 2015.

In other board matters:

The supervisors will again consider three options to improving security at the Southampton County Circuit Courthouse. The proposed costs are $192,000, $185,000 and $176,000.

As required by state code, the board will have to meet publicly to organize by electing a chairman, vice chairman and establishing date, location and times of regular meetings. A date proposed for this action is Monday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at the supervisors’ usual meeting place in the county headquarters.
