Lady Bronco basketball team opens season with loss to Southampton Indians

FRANKLIN—“We are brand new and are in a teaching year to learn the game,” said Franklin High School Lady Bronco Coach Mona Sumblin after her team dropped the season opener 74 – 18 to the Southampton Indians.

Playing Monday night at the Peggy Wilkins gym in Franklin High School, Sumblin continued, “ We have to work with that we have,” as she noted her number of players for this season were few.

The Indians opened the game with a big 16-point run before the Lady Broncos got on the scoreboard following two free-throws by Josethine Rankin at the 3:15 mark in the first quarter of play. The first quarter ended with the Lady Indians up 22–7.

Although the first half ended with the Lady Indians up 45–10, Southampton High School Lady Indians Coach Aronda Bell remarked after the game, “We have a lot of work to do.”

Aronda added that she was overall pleased with everyone making a big contribution as many of her players saw action doing the game. The Lady Indians had three players in double figures. They were TaUsha Jenkins with 23 points, followed by Bryona Knight with 13 points and Brittney Johnson with 10 points.

For the Lady Broncos, Latrina Cross led the scoring with 8 points.
