WAKEFIELD – Charles Christopher Travis, 94, of Wakefield, passed away on December 12, 2013.

He is survived by his son, Stanley Travis and wife, Gloria of Wakefield and his daughter, Carol Travis Ranelli, of Richmond. He had four grandchildren: Sandra Griffin of Virginia Beach, Stephen Travis of Peoria, Arizona, Scott Travis of Wakefield and Lisa Alexander of New York City, ten great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Jean Vaughan and many close family members.

He was predeceased by his parents, Chrissie C. and Felicia Lanier Travis of Wakefield and his wife of 72 years, Lillian Boykin Travis.

Charles and Lillian left Wakefield in 1936 and lived in the northern Virginia area for forty years before moving back to Wakefield after his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Naples, Italy for almost two years.

Charles worked most of his career for the Federal government with the Department of Defense and General Services Administration.

After WWII, Charles was accepted into the George Washington Masonic Lodge in Alexandria, VA and later transferred to the Wakefield Lodge. He recently celebrated his 60th year as a Mason.

He was involved for years with the Annandale Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school, on the Board of Trustees and the Methodist Men’s Fellowship. He continued his involvement after returning to Wakefield with Wakefield United Methodist Church, helping with their Capital Growth Planning for expansion of the church.

Charles was an avid gardener, hunter, world traveler and exceptional craftsman in wood, creating furniture and other special items for family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and mentor to his younger cousins. Above all, he will be remembered as the consummate southern gentleman.

The family will receive friends Saturday, December 14, 2013 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory Wakefield Chapel from 6 to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Wakefield United Methodist Church with Rev. Curtis D. Lucy officiating. Burial will follow at Wakefield Cemetery.
