WINDSOR–The Town of Windsor will not join the newly created Virginia Local Disability Program, which provides long- and short-term disability insurance for employees covered by the new hybrid Virginia Retirement System plan.

The council decided instead to opt out of the insurance program and provide its own coverage through one of two other insurance companies.

Town Manager Michael Stallings said the new legislation provided the option of opting out as long as comparable coverage was offered, and he felt it would not be in the town’s best interest to join VLDP.

The council is looking at comparable coverage through either the Virginia Municipal League Insurance Program or the Virginia Association of Counties.

Stallings added that the two companies both offer plans that satisfies the coverage requirement, and by opting out, this allows for changing providers at a later date if necessary.

In another matter, council voted to keep the personal property relief rate the same as last year at 32 percent.
