FRANKLIN—Traditionally, the City of Franklin has taken holidays off for waste collection, and so when they rolled out to collect garbage on Labor Day, not very many people had put out their trash.

Due to limited resources and staff, city waste trucks are going to run on holidays other than Thanksgiving and Christmas, rather than attempting to double up the load on days after the holidays, said City Manager Randy Martin.

“We tried to pick up on Monday, but unfortunately, a good number of people were not aware,” he said. “So, we are going to try to do everything we can to get the word out. We are even looking at the feasibility of putting a notice with the utility bills.”

The next holiday that would traditionally be taken off is Columbus Day on Oct. 14, and Martin said workers would be picking up that day.

“We don’t want people to miss their pickups, especially people who accumulate enough trash that it is a hardship to go two weeks,” he said. “For some people it is hard to go two weeks without their collection. The garbage will be overflowing.”

In other news, the City of Franklin Police Department will be asking Martin to declare 107 bicycles surplus property so that they can be sold at public auction.

The money collected will go to the general fund.

The bicycles accumulate over the years from various sources, typically they are abandoned on public property, but sometimes people will call and say that a bike has been abandoned on their property.

“They take up space, and it does not do them any good laying around until they rust,” he said. “So, people can get a bike at a much reduced cost, that is otherwise not serving anybody.”

Martin said if you have a missing bicycle, to contact the police department and see if it has turned up.
