To the Editor:

This year I served as a volunteer in the Boykins Volunteer Fire Department food booth at the fair. It was set up inside the main building, which gave one the opportunity to get a good look at the vendor, civic and service booths.

Excellent information was provided on the services those groups provide for our area. One of the booths was on litter control.

Evidently few people paid attention to this one, based on what I was to see later.

Waiting to leave the fairgrounds on Friday night, I waked outside to the main stage area and was appalled at the sight left behind. It looked as if a tornado had struck. Trash and debris were everywhere.

I thought to myself, ‘Is this what we have come to? Do we have such a lack of respect for the property of others, much less for ourselves?’

What are we teaching our children, for most of what was left were beer cups and other stuff that only adults could have consumed.

No wonder our highways and city streets are filled with litter, and countless tax dollars spend cleaning up our mess.

We all know someone has to be paid. So, the next time we decide to litter, whether it be at the fair or the highway, or the city streets, we need to think about whose pockets the money is coming from.

It might be ours.
