COURTLAND—These are the sweepstakes winners in the most recent Field Crops, Horticulture, Flowers and Plants exhibition, which was held at the Franklin-Southampton County Fair, as reported by Chris Drake, extension agent for Southampton County:

• Adult Horticulture: Turtle Creek Farms of Newsoms

• Adult Field Crops: Rose Valley Farms from Courtland

• Youth Field Crops: Ford Fox of Capron

• Youth Horticulture: Briggs Simmons of Sandy Run Farms in Sebrell

Jeanette Everette of Joyner made the perfect guess of 44.5 pounds in the watermelon weight contest. Ford Fox provided that melon.

“I just took a wild guess,” Everette said about her entry. “My husband (M.L. Everette) is a farmer and I’ve been on the farm for the past 36 years.”

She added she’s already kind of familiar with the weight of pumpkins, and so just thought of watermelons instead. Zachary Banty of Stony Creek made the correct guess of 65 pounds in the pumpkin weight contest. That pumpkin was provided by Kreig O’Bryant of Capron. Each winner received a gift card to Southern Sisters.

There were 27 participants in the youth categories with a total of $269 in premium money awarded for first-, second- and third-place entries.
