COURTLAND—Extension Agent Chris Drake and area farmer Gary Cross were among the people from Southampton County who attended the Ag Expo in Virginia Beach last Thursday, said Drake.

“The Ag Expo was well attended, despite the heavy downpours that occurred from 9 to 10 a.m. in Virginia Beach. There were many farmers in attendance from Southampton County,” he said.

“There were displays and equipment of all types. I saw a remote control aerial imaging drone that was used to record photos of fields to determine problem areas from the sky.

“Nearly every major crop protection chemical manufacturer was on hand with information and displays. The field tours resumed after the rain subsided and were well received by attendees. The topics included aerial imagery, high yield corn management, potassium evaluations in soybeans, cotton and grain sorghum evaluations, vegetable production and current issues in swine production.”

Nasty weather, as Cross described it, kept him from taking advantage of field tours. Nonetheless, “I thought it was a well put-on event. A right fair turnout,” he said. “There were lots to see, lots of vendors. It was a good mid-season break.”

Cross also said he noticed the soil was darker, but that the crops growing in the location looked very nice.
