COURTLAND—A Southampton County couple has been arrested in connection with a methamphetamine lab in a trailer park on Hyders Drive, said Major Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Christopher K. Barrett, 48, and Michelle Manning, 39, were arrested at 8:30 a.m. Friday and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and having the materials to manufacture methamphetamine, Drewery said. This is the first methamphetamine arrest this year, and the fourth in the past two years. He said there are other investigations on methamphetamine production.

Undercover agents have been working on this for months, said Drewery. Authorities became suspicious due to their names coming up in a database involving Sudafed purchases.

A one-pot meth lab was found in their trailer, along with a trace amount of methamphetamine, the officer said.

Drewery said several nearby trailer homes have been evacuated as a precaution. Authorities will assess if the trailer is suitable for habitation. The trailer park owners said they had no idea this was going on. Drewery said a smell would not be detectable with a one-pot meth lab.

The Virginia State Police and Drug Enforcement Administration also participated in this bust.

Barrett is in the Southampton County Jail with no bond, and Manning is at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail with a $3,000 bond. An arraignment for both will be held Tuesday, July 16, in Southampton County Circuit Court.
