PLAINFIELD, N.J.—Augusta S. Brookens, age 86, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the JFK Hartwyck @Cedar Brook Nursing Home in Plainfield, N.J. Born and raised in King William County, Va., Mrs. Brookens had resided there until moving to Plainfield, N.J., in 1959. She was a graduate of the King William Training High School in 1943 and received her bachelor’s degree in English and social studies from Virginia Union University in 1949. Mrs. Brookens earned a Master’s Degree in special education in 1973 from Kean College.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Brookens began her career as a teacher at the Central High School in King and Queen, Va. She later went on to work at the Raritan Valley Unit (ARC) in New Brunswick for twenty years. She also taught at the After School Neighborhood House in Plainfield, N.J.
She was an active member of the Faith Christian Outreach Church in Plainfield, N.J. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening and loved spending time with her family.
She is predeceased by her husband Harry Brookens in 1982.
Surviving is her daughter, Glynis Brookens, and her son, Matthew Brookens, and his wife, Tanya; two grandchildren, Ryan and Kyle Brookens all of Plainfield, N.J.; her brother, Foster L. Smith Sr. and his wife, Hattie; and sisters, Rosina L. Smith and Mattie S. Morton.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 W. 8th St., Plainfield, N.J., and on Saturday, July 13from 9 to 10 a.m. at Faith Christian Outreach Church, 533 W. 5th St., Plainfield, N.J., followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service.
