FRANKLIN—A caregiver has been arrested in connection with a July 1 home invasion, said Major Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton Sheriff’s Office.

Erica Shandrika Bradshaw, 31, of Brandon Street in Franklin, has been charged with attempted murder, burglary with the intent to commit murder and grand larceny, Drewery said. Drewery said Bradshaw, who will be arraigned today in Southampton County General District Court, is being held in the Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.

Detectives developed probable cause through interviews and anonymous tips, which led to the warrants being issued, Drewery said. Bradshaw was the nurse who originally reported that a crime had taken place to the sheriff’s office.

On July 1, a burglar entered the home of Phillip Everette, 67, during the night, breaking a window in the back door to gain entry. The burglar took a large amount of cash. An exact amount has not yet been released.

Everette, who lived alone in his double-wide trailer, was paralyzed from the neck down and received assistance from nurses.

Drewery said that the phone and power lines had been cut, however the sheriff’s office could not confirm that the lines were cut by the burglar. Drewery said that the break-in occurred sometime between 11 p.m. and 7:45 a.m.

Everette suffered lacerations to the head and was treated and released from Southampton Memorial Hospital. Everette was believed to have been struck by a fence picket.
