WAKEFIELD—The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a flash flood watch for areas that include Southampton County. The watch remains in effect until Friday afternoon.

NWS Meteorologist Lyle Alexander said that there is a slow-moving system affecting Southeast Virginia and Northeast North Carolina.

Alexander said residents can expect 2-3 inches of rain to fall throughout the night, and more could fall in localized areas.

“People should be alert to the possibility of a flash flood warning that might be issued,” Alexander said. “Especially if they live near areas that are prone to flooding, such as creeks or other low-lying areas. They need to just be wary that water could come up if the heavy rain concentrates on one area at a time.”
