NEWSOMS—Residents from Newsoms, Windsor, Franklin and as far away as Charlotte, N.C., came out to Main Street for some camaraderie in the 9th annual Fourth of July Parade.

“It is just hometown Americana — it is just fun,” said Gaynelle Riddick of Franklin. “It brings people together for a special day in this country — people need to step back and think about it.”

The highlight of the day was the parade, which went up main street, and came back for a second round. Floats included four-wheelers, bicycles, fire trucks, old cars and tractors. The grand marshal of the parade was 99-year-old Louise Story.

“I think it was excellent for a small town, and the good thing about this one is that you get to see it twice,” said H.B. Bryant.

“It was fun, and very decorative,” added 9-year-old Jordan Bowden.

Bowden also sang the National Anthem along with the Shiloh Grass Band.

“That was my first time singing in public,” Bowden said. “It was fun and for a very special occasion.”

The biggest thing about the day, however, was that it brought people together, said Ruritan President Brent Edwards.

“I think it just brings people together,” said Edwards. “It is something — folks you have not seen all year, they come out to the parade, and it is special to see them.”

Other events included softball, both for old-timers and youth, and food, hot dogs, sweet corn and watermelon.

“I come down every year to see the parade,” James Ruffin of Franklin said. “I just enjoy it, you can get some food, spend some time with some nice people and see fire trucks and old cars.”
