BOYKINS—The spirit of independence continues in the town of Boykins with its July Jubilee from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 6. Mayor Richard Spier Edwards Jr. said the food, fun and games would take place at the ballpark on Bryant Avenue, not Virginia Avenue as previously advertised elsewhere.

The Pedal Parade, featuring children on bicycles and tricycles, is scheduled for the morning, and Bryant Avenue will be closed for that particular event.

Inflatables, music provided by a DJ and cookie walks are also planned for the day.

“Everybody come and enjoy,” said Edwards.

The mayor said Boykins used to have an Independence Day celebration, but when the town joined the Virginia Main Street program, that got taken over.

Fireworks were once part of the celebration.

“The problem now is that a specialist is required to shoot fireworks, and we have not been able to acquire someone qualified,” Edwards said. “Also, it costs a lot of money and we just don’t have that funding.”
