MANTEO, N.C.—Adrian Ernul Brown Jr., 94, of Manteo, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, in Virginia Beach, Va. Born in Greenville, N.C., he was the son of the late Adrian Ernul Brown and Hannah Cuthrell Brown.

He was a retired public school teacher and coach, a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, a life member of Greenville Lodge #284 AF & AM, played on the 1941 undefeated East Carolina University team, a former cast member of “The Lost Colony,” and served his country honorably during World War II in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nan Lou Brown; three sons, Adrian E. Brown III and wife, Beverly, of Camden, N.C.; Charles M. Brown and wife, Beverly, of Courtland, Va.; and Alex K. Brown and wife, Julie, of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, James P. Brown of Manteo, N.C.; 12 grandchildren, Tara Brengel, Larry Popperwill, Adrian Brown IV, Justin Brown, William Brown, Michael Brown, Alex Brown Jr., Hannah Brice, Daniel Brown, Rebecca Brown, Iman Brown and Malcolm Brown; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane Hall and two brothers, Wiley and Joe Brown.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jerry Cribb. Entombment will be private in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family received friends and relatives in the social hall immediately following the church service.
