Ellen H. Stephenson

Ellen Hudgins Stephenson died on June 21, 2013 at age 89. Born on October 15, 1923 in Lunenburg County, Va., she was the daughter of Thomas Edward and Ida Smithson Wood Hudgins, and sister to the late Dr. Frances E. Hudgins.

Mrs. Stephenson graduated from Victoria High School and was a 1943 graduate of Longwood College. She taught home economics and chemistry in Southampton County, Va. for four years. In 1947, she married the late Edgar Vick Stephenson, Jr. of Ivor, and together they made their home there for over sixty years.

She is survived by her three children: Julia S. Tyler and husband Bob of Mechanicsville, Va., Martha S. Barry and husband Bob of Virginia Beach, and T. E. (Ned) Stephenson and wife Susan of Tappahannock, Va.; grandchildren Ann S. Pietrantoni (Jim) of Richmond, Va., David Davis (Jan) of Mechanicsville, Va., Carolyn S. Gosse (Alec) of Charlottesville, Claire Stephenson of Denver, Co., Laura Barry and Emily Barry of Virginia Beach; and four great-grandsons.

Mrs. Stephenson was a member of Ivor Baptist Church where she served as pianist, mission leader, and adult Sunday School teacher for over forty years.

Active in her community as well, she was a member of the Ivor Town Council, co-founder of the Ivor Medical Center, and organized many civic and church activities through the years.

A consummate homemaker, Mrs. Stephenson brought dignity and elegance to all of her endeavors. She spent her life in exemplary faithfulness to her husband and family, her church and community, and to countless persons who made their way to her door for advice and counsel for more than a half-century.

A memorial service will be held at Ivor Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2013. The family will share fellowship and remembrances immediately following the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ivor Baptist Church, 8506 Bell Ave., Ivor, Va. 23866.
