Southampton County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Gene Drewery said Tuesday, “There are multiple suspects or persons of interest.”

Southampton County Sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from the Virginia State Police and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency, served a search warrant at a residence in the 25000 block of Greenbriar Drive in Newsoms on the afternoon of May 28.

When the warrant was served at 2:37 p.m., a search of the residence revealed an inside marijuana grow operation. Items seized included 99 plants, loose marijuana, buckets, scales, a pistol and ammunition. The estimated street value of the plants is $297,000.

The investigation continues and Drewery said, “There could be federal charges because of the weapon and size of the grow.”

He added, “There is also evidence that is being analyzed that could strengthen the probable cause of the case.”
