Don’t let hurricanes catch you off guard

There’s potentially bad news and definite good news about hurricanes this year.

First, the not-so-great news: The prediction center for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration foresees an active season for the storms. The website for the center even goes so far as to state “extremely active.”

The season, which lasts for approximately six months, could see 13 to 20 named storms, and of those seven to 11 could develop to hurricane strength of 74 miles per hour or higher. Three to six could be major with winds of 111 mph or higher.

Second, the positive spin: None of us can control the weather, but each person can be prepared. While you’re shopping for steaks, sodas and sun block, pick up bottled water, flashlights and plenty of batteries.

Before taking any vacations, ensure your car is in shape should an evacuation be required.

When you’re told to leave your home and take shelter, don’t take the chance you can ride it out. Nature is stronger than anyone’s luck. Just ask people struck by Sandy last fall.

In case you forget this, be assured we’ll likely remind you later. Meanwhile, NOAAA offers other tips online that can be found at www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/.
