Events to honor veterans

Many area towns are observing Memorial Day services. While the Town of Boykins has already held theirs, here are some of the others The Tidewater News has been notified about:

SUNDAY, MAY 26

Capron

The Town of Capron will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 11 a.m., Sunday, May 26, at the Capron Cemetery. This year’s speaker will be retired United States Marine, Steven Glascock. In case of rain, the service will be held at Capron Baptist Church.

Sedley

A Memorial Day service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 26, at Rosemont Cemetery in Sedley. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Rita Kanten of Grace Memorial United Methodist Church. Bring your lawn chairs. In case of rain, the service will be held at the church.

Newsoms

Hollywood Cemetery will hold its Memorial Day Service at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 26. In case of rain, the service will be held at Newsoms Baptist Church. The speaker is Lt. John Johnson and music will be provided by Linda T. Drake, Michelle Wise and Blaine Britt.

Ivor

The town of Ivor will celebrate its Community Memorial Day Service at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 26, in the Ivor Cemetery. In case of rain the service will be held in the Ivor Municipal Building. The speaker will be Pastor Don Roberts of Ivor Baptist Church and the music will be presented by “The Generations” — Molly and Sarah Dowless, Leslie and Allison Brittle, and Sandy Vick.

MONDAY, MAY 27

Franklin

A Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m., May 27, at Southview Cemetery. The guest speaker will be LTC (retired) Herman Harris, Jr., US Medical Service Corps. Harris is a graduate of Franklin High School. The Rev. Blaine Britt will perform patriotic music. There will be a music selection by Hattie and Rita Carter. Franklin

A Memorial Day service will be held at 1 p.m. at Poplar Springs Cemetery, May 27. Sponsored by Charles R. Younts American Legion Post 73, the guest speaker will be Richard L. (Rick) Morris, Member Virginia House of Delegates, 64th District. In case of bad weather, the service will be held at the American Legion building at 935 Armory Drive.

Drewryville

A Memorial Day Service will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, May 27 at the Drewryville Cemetery. Rick Franklin, Lay Pastor of Drewryville United Methodist Church and former aide to Rep. Randy Forbes, will be the speaker. Boy Scout Troop #17 will be participating in the service. Please bring a lawn chair. The Drewryville Woman’s Club is hosting the service.
