Responding to a call of a vehicle crash westbound on Southampton Parkway (Highway 58) at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday, Southampton Sheriff’s department arrived on the scene to find a big rig lying on its side, blocking both lanes of the road. The driver of the big rig was Rocky Baker, of Ruther’s Glenn, Va.

According to Southampton County Sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Gene Drewery, the tractor-trailer struck a dump truck owned by C&J Trucking, which had slowed for the school-crossing zone. The dump truck driver was not injured.

The tractor-trailer, owned by Cross Globe Trucking of Newport News, overturned after striking the dump truck in the rear. Capron Rescue treated the driver, Baker, on scene for minor injuries.

According to Drewery, Baker was arrested at the scene and charged with DUI. He was taken into custody and held until released on bond Tuesday night. He will be arraigned on the DUI charge either today or Tuesday, May 21.
