FRANKLIN—Franklin’s city council endorsed a letter of congratulations Monday night to local Boy Scout Troop 17 for celebrating its 100th Anniversary coming up in June.

To be signed by Mayor Raystine Johnson-Ashburn, the letter was read aloud by Vice Mayor Barry Cheatham.

The letter, in part, states, “On behalf of the City of Franklin and all the members of the Franklin City Council, I offer heartfelt congratulations and sincere best wishes on the occasion of your distinguished organization’s upcoming centennial celebration. Having been chartered by the High Street United Methodist Church in 1913, Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop 17 has served this community admirably for 100 years. Achieving this milestone would not have been possible without tremendous stability and the capable leadership and dedicated participation of both the youth members and adult scoutmasters throughout this period.”

It further states, “Boy Scouts of America has withstood the test of time and Troop 17 has brought honor to BSA and most certainly made a difference in Franklin, Virginia during the troop’s 100 years of existence.”

Following the reading of the letter, Councilman Benny Burgess, an Eagle Scout, said the Troop was a great organizations and “it says something for the youth and adults to last 100 years.”

All of the council agreed and offered comments about their own family members who have participated in scouting.

The letter will be framed and presented to Troop 17 leaders during the upcoming Centennial celebration set for June 7-9.
