FRANKLIN—Lancelot Limo Services Inc., has rolled into town, and passengers will have Chris Cornwell to thank.

The Ivor resident said inspiration came when he and his family used a limousine for travel this past Christmas. Cornwell said his father booked it for the seven of them to see the Virginia Symphony perform at the Chrysler Hall in Norfolk.

“We really enjoyed it, and knew other people would as well,” Cornwell said. “There are not too many limousine services in western Hampton Roads. I saw a niche in the market as a potential business.”

Regularly working as a lieutenant in the Suffolk Fire Department, this is just a side business for now, he said.

Work on creating the service began this past February. Cornwell got his operating authority this past Saturday from the DMV, just in time to chauffeur students from Southampton High School for their prom.

The limos aren’t just for high school festivities and weddings. Cornwell offers a chauffeur service for businessmen and women to pick them up at the airport or take them to their appointments.

People such as senior citizens who can no longer drive or use public transportation, can contact Lancelot Limo Services to carry them to doctors’ offices, grocery stores or shopping.

Trips to football games, such as Virginia Tech, are made more appealing when driving’s not a factor.

“I can eliminate the hassle,” Cornwell said, adding he can carry 10 passengers or so. A full bar and television are available so they can have tailgate parties to and from Blacksburg.

Cornwell doesn’t do all the driving himself. There’s a staff of part-time drivers, many of them co-workers in public safety.

Speaking of which, most drivers are qualified to administer basic first aid in case of emergencies.

But there are more than first-aid kits in each vehicle; umbrellas, lint rollers, flashlights, sewing kits, tie pins and, of course, a red carpet are all provided.
