RICHMOND—Harriet Pendleton Craigie Van Houten, 83, of Richmond, died peacefully on April 5, 2013 after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Williams Craigie and Helen Walker Craigie. She is survived by her husband of almost 30 years, Erskine van Houten; her brothers, Walter W. Craigie and wife, Beese, of Richmond, and Carter Craigie and wife, Kay, of Blacksburg, Va.; her daughters, Nelle Hotchkiss of Raleigh, N.C., and Dr. Margaret Blanchard of Newport News, Va.; sons, Carter Hotchkiss of Franklin, Va., and Chuck Hotchkiss and his wife, Elizabeth, of Winston-Salem. She loved her grandchildren, Beth Husted and her husband, Greg, of Charlotte, N.C., Peggy Cieslikowski and her husband, Dan, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Allen Hotchkiss of Chicago, Ill.; and her great-grandson, James Husted of Charlotte, N.C. Harriet was a graduate of St. Margaret’s School and attended Hollins College. Throughout her life she devoted herself to the study of antiques, even teaching classes out of her home on the dining room table. She enjoyed many hours as a docent at Wilton House. Harriet was a member of The Colonial Dames of America, the Boxwood Garden Club, The Antiquarian Society and The Woman’s Club of Richmond. Harriet was grateful for her extended family and many friends. The family wishes to express its gratitude to Cedarfield’s Health Care and the many caregivers who helped make her comfortable over these last years, especially Robin Shearin and Mary Green. A service was held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. A reception followed the service in the Parish Hall. Arrangements were by Bennett Funeral Home.
