Lady Raiders fall to Lady Knights in tennis

COURTLAND—Blessed Sacrament Huguenot defeated the Southampton Academy tennis team 8-1 amid blustery and cold conditions in Powhatan on March 27, according to SA Coach Joann Gatten. In singles, the Lady Knights swept all six singles matches. SA’s No. 2 singles player, Olivia Fox, picked up the most games on the day before losing 8-5 to Haleigh Lader of BSH.

In doubles, SA’s No. 3 team of Rachel White and Selena Johnson picked up the first high school win of their careers and the only team point of the day with a 8-2 win over Frazier/Goodwyn. The Lady Knights won the closely contested No. 1 doubles match with Anna Ransom and Haleigh Lader holding on to beat Barclay Gatten and Olivia Fox 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, the SA team of Kirsten Wachsmann and Mina Johnson continued to show progress despite losing to BSH’s Katie Clark and Alissa Doebler, 8-1.

Last week the Lady Raiders dropped their second match of the season in Waverly against Tidewater Academy. SA’s No. 1 player, Barclay Gatten, led the way for the Raiders by not dropping a game in singles or doubles. Mina Johnson picked up a singles win for the SA, defeating her opponent 6-3. She also teamed with Kirsten Wachsmann for a competitive doubles match before falling to their TA opponents, 4-8.
