NEWSOMS—Town leaders of Newsoms have paid recent tribute to the late Daniel P. Barraclough, who died in an automobile accident on March 24. A resolution of appreciation was passed unanimously when the council met April 1.

“Since they moved here, they’ve been a very integral part of the community,” Mayor Harvey J. Porter Jr. said about Daniel and his wife, Mary. She had been injured in the same accident and, according to Porter, is recuperating at the home of one of her children.

The Barracloughs, along with her son, John Geary, had opened Mary’z Restaurant in Newsoms in March 2012.

Porter remembers when Daniel would give updates on the restaurant’s progress, and occasionally invite the council to eat light hors d’oeuvres.

The resolution notes not only the restaurant, but also Daniel Barraclough’s support to the Newsoms Police Department, volunteer fire department and “all community endeavors for the benefit of Newsoms residents.”

“He’ll be sorely missed by the community over here,” said Porter.

Vice Mayor Kenneth Cooke has known the Barracloughs for the past four or five years, and will miss Daniel as a regular bowling partner on Tuesdays.

“Dan was an excellent bowler. He participated in several tournaments,” said Cooke. He also praised him and Mary as “real good people.”
