CAPRON—The Virginia State Police were called to a single vehicle charter bus accident Friday morning, which resulted in a single fatality.

The accident occurred at approximately 7:05 a.m., eastbound on Route 58 at Route 652 in Capron. A charter bus that was headed to Hampton from Chapel Hill, N.C., lost control and ran off the right side of the road overturning in a ditch.

The bus was transporting eight passengers and the driver. Two passengers were ejected from the vehicle. One died of injuries at the scene. According to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. M. Anaya, the fatality has been identified as Doval Emmanuel Watson, 58, of Chapel Hill, N.C.

The bus was bringing students to Hampton University’s Open House Day. According to a spokesperson with the Durham-Chapel Hill Chapter of the Hampton University Alumni Association, Watson and his wife, Teresa, annually organize a trip for middle and high school students and act as chaperones.

The bus departed from the Home Depot Parking Lot in Chapel Hill this morning. Two students boarded there and the other four were apparently picked up along the way in Henderson.

The students were transported to Southampton Memorial Hospital this morning. According to a SMH spokesperson, the six students are all fine and are waiting for rides home. An adult, believed to be the bus driver, is awaiting discharge. Teresa Watson has been airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and her condition is unknown at this time.

The investigation continues and state police will provide additional information as it progresses.
