WINDSOR—Windsor police on Tuesday continued to investigate an alleged assault by a 77-year-old man on an 84-year-old woman in the Alzheimer’s ward of a nursing home.

Police Chief Vic Reynolds said after consulting with the Isle of Wight County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, a detective will interview the suspect’s medical providers “so we can better determine what is the best way to proceed.”

The alleged Saturday assault took place in the woman’s room at Consulate Health Care of Windsor on Courthouse Highway.

According to Reynolds, the man punched the woman when she was in her bed. The woman suffered moderate injuries and as of Monday, remained at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk. Without her name, The Tidewater News could not check on her condition.

An employee reported the assault.

The suspect was taken to another Tidewater facility that caters more to his needs, Reynolds said.

He didn’t want to speculate what charges the man could face.

“It is a complicated situation,” Reynolds said. “I’m going to rely on my detectives, who will go to the facility where he was taken.”

He does not expect the suspect to be interviewed.

“There is really no need to have further discussions with him without him having legal representation,” Reynolds said.

“I don’t think it would be fair to question someone who is mentally incapacitated.”
